Developmental/Experimental

Developmental and experimental work for the overall outcome of “Fairy Suspended” has been continual over the entirety of 2021, including my works “Water Spells” and “EYES”. My installation work from first semester, “Pillow Fort”, first began exploring the concept of comfort in memory and nostalgia, this being the catalyst for further exploration through “Fairy Suspended”

“Pillow Fort”, 2021

bed sheets, sony trinitron monitor, fluffy pink pillow, sheer curtain, speaker, yarn, knitting needles, fluffy, faux fur rug

Following an influx of nostalgic memories of my own childhood, I found myself striving to find that same comfort I felt when I was small, sitting at home watching my favourite tv shows, with blankets and pillows and my favourite colours. “Pillow Fort”, 2021, is just that. That unique comfort of the past where you can literally sit in a nostalgic, safe, immersive space. This work is definitely more affective and specific to those brought up in the early 2000s in Australia as well as female presenting, although there is still a general gist as you watch the kids shows flashing across the screen and the overlaid show theme songs playing simultaneously. You truly feel you are safe. The idea of the work is that one at a time viewers are to sit cross legged or comfortably as if you’re little again on the large pink pillow provided, in front of the screen in the centre of the installation. Sensory work, sound, visuals and textures.

“Water

Spells”

Stills from “Water Spells” video, 2021

“Water Spells” references the super power feeling you would get as a child, when you’d move your hands to control the water in your 6pm shower.

Stills from “Water Spells” experimental, installation work below

“Water Spells” is an experimental performative video work that was created to test visuals in collaboration with “Fairy Suspended”. I initially speculated potentially playing this video on multiple stacked CRT monitor screens behind the hanging wings, inspired by my first semester work “EYES”, 2021. I later adapted to the idea of projection due to flexibility in a covid context.

“EYES”, 2021

Stacked Sony Trinitron CRT monitors, installed video work - featuring a montage of extreme close ups of eyes in film.

Fairy Suspended Bathroom Mockup

Due to lockdown, the bathroom became the optimal place to test this work and other experiments over the course of the semester. Below, are stills from the “Fairy Suspended” draft install.

Each of these works heavily influenced the final outcome of this folio
